What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
