People living in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza noted the day began with unusual quietness, with a large number opting to stay home amid uncertainty over if the demonstrations would proceed.
The demonstrations were called to demand changes to the political system in the wake of the unrest that followed last October's elections which resulted in an unconfirmed death toll.
Government Acknowledges Employing Force
The authorities have admitted using force against protesters, claiming that certain elements aimed to topple the government.
On Tuesday, reporters observed nearly empty streets in the business hub, Dar es Salaam. This was a stark contrast to the city's typical weekday activity.
The quiet was undercut by a persistent sense of tension.
Increased Police Presence Nationwide
Armored vehicles were spotted cruising along primary thoroughfares and junctions, while officers took up positions at strategic locations, including around key public infrastructure.
On social media, activists and campaigners urged followers to remain vigilant, implying that any protest activity would likely commence later in the day. The messaging echoed past mobilization efforts in the country, when turnout increased later in the day.
Motorists who ventured out reported regular stops at security checkpoints, where officers questioned drivers about where they were headed.
Government Stance and Bans
Authorities have not provided detailed comments on the increased security or on the planned protests.
The government has prohibited the planned protests and cancelled independence day celebrations, advising the public to remain at home.
