The Red Devils Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
