During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Historic Figure

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
