NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his victory in November.

"My choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda voters supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, it will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
