The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how parent company Unilever stopped the introduction for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business with his partner, disclosed how he will independently develop this new product as part of an individual series highlighting issues the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Between Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest announcement deepens the continuing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted that the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options and additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Current Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which originally established in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Future Plans
Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
