The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner Know the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by fan response, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to throw out a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
