An informant has told a parliamentary probe that the UK abandoned classified equipment permitting the militant group to track down local individuals who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk

The source, identified as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the security lapse were advised to relocate and change their contact details to avoid detection from the Taliban.

MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a catastrophic breach of personal details affecting approximately 19k individuals who had asked to move to the United Kingdom to avoid the Taliban.

The Information Breach Happened

A data file containing their personal data, including identities, contact details and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by an official stationed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The breach came to light months later, when identities of several individuals who had sought to relocate to the UK appeared on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a false assumption that Afghan rulers do not have similar capabilities that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire your phone number, they are able to track you down to within metres. This is exactly how intelligence groups did.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities possessed sophisticated technology, Person A declared: “They have complete capability.”

Impact of the Information Leak

Initial findings submitted to the inquiry estimated that at least 49 kin and co-workers of people concerned by the breach had been killed.

A legal restriction about the incident was put in force in August 2023 and prevented relevant facts about it from media reporting until recently.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the non-governmental organization she was working with told individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been breached”.

“We recommended that they relocate if they could and changed their contact details. These represented the two main details that, if the Taliban acquired such data, would cause identification and capture,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

The source argued that an official review performed by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to determine that the acquisition of the dataset by the Taliban was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are not standing up to the Taliban; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves past work history.”

The source explained terrible violence experienced by affected individuals, comprising electrocution, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had their arms broken to force households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
