Forecasters are saying a frosty start to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Continue In Spite of Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," said the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be cold, making extra layers essential, according to forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.

Readings Forecast to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Released

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this indicated the weather could to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a expected uptick in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is absolutely essential.
