Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in March.
