The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
